Beginnings

B. Zaman Law Chambers has been providing professional and comprehensive legal services for over 70 years. However, our story begins even before that with Mr. Mian Abdul Latif PCS, District and Sessions Judge (1932 to 1948), one of the two Muslim Session Court Judges under British rule.

Torchbearers

Mian Abdul Latif’s son, Mian Badi-uz-Zaman, graduated with Honours from the Punjab University in 1947, and established M. B. Zaman Law Chambers in 1950 on Turner Road, behind the Lahore High Court, and it remains one of the oldest post-partition, full service law firms in Lahore. M. B. Zaman had the honour of arguing several criminal trials of national and intentional importance, locally and abroad, including International Arbitrations in Baghdad (1960) and the United Kingdom (1970) as well as representing Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan at the International Court of Justice at the Hague, Netherlands in 1984-85. He remained Assistant Advocate General for West Pakistan from 1957 till 1964. He was then appointed Advocate General for West Pakistan from 1967 till 1971, and thereafter, served as Advocate General Punjab from 1971 till 1975. He was the first Prosecutor General of the Ehtesaab (now NAB) Ordinance and remained in active practice till his passing in February 1995. Numerous associates of M. B. Zaman Law Chambers have been elevated to the Benches of the High Court and Supreme Court.

Progression

Following M. B. Zaman’s passing, his sons, Mian Muhammad Najam-uz-Zaman and Mian Muhammad Qamar-uz-Zaman took over the practice at M. B. Zaman Law Chambers. Mian Najum-uz-Zaman took up criminal litigation at the Chambers, and later served as Assistant Advocate General, Punjab, before being elevated to the bench of the Lahore High Court as Judge in 1998. Mian Qamar-uz-Zaman focused his practice on civil litigation and has had the privilege of serving on numerous governmental and private advisory boards including Lahore Developmental Authority, Evacuee Trust Property Board, Minority Affairs Division of Government of Pakistan, National College of Arts, National Bank of Pakistan and Muslim Commercial Bank Ltd, as well as serving as Assistant Advocate General, Punjab. Presently, Mian Qamar-uz-Zaman’s son, Osama Zaman hopes to keep M. B. Zaman’s legacy alive as a fourth generation of legal practitioner at the M. B. Zaman Law Chambers.
